KYIV: In a severe escalation of aerial assaults, Russia launched a massive and deadly wave of ballistic missiles targeting Ukraine’s capital city, Kyiv, and numerous other regions across the country on August 1, 2026. The attack, which came just days after another nationwide bombardment, overwhelmed Ukrainian air defenses and caused significant civilian casualties and infrastructure damage.
Dozens of Ballistic Missiles Target the Capital
The overnight attack primarily targeted Kyiv, with the Ukrainian Air Force reporting that Russia launched a total of 220 aerial weapons, including 35 missiles and 185 drones. The missile salvo consisted heavily of ballistic weaponry, including 27 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles, alongside Tsirkon/Oniks anti-ship missiles, and Kh-31 anti-radiation missiles.
The strikes caused profound devastation across at least seven districts in the capital. According to local authorities and the Kyiv City Military Administration, the attack on August 1 killed at least nine people and injured 30 others, including four children.
In the Solomianskyi district, a five-story residential apartment building partially collapsed and caught fire, resulting in two fatalities, while rescue crews evacuated 35 residents from the upper floors. The deadliest impact occurred in the Darnytskyi district, where seven people were killed and 14 were injured, including two children. The strikes also caused fires at warehouse buildings, industrial facilities, and damaged supermarkets, civilian vehicles, and Lithuania’s embassy.
A Critical Shortage of Interceptors
The sheer volume of ballistic missiles overwhelmed the capital’s defense systems. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed a stark vulnerability following the attack, stating that Ukraine was only able to intercept a single ballistic missile out of the 27 launched. He attributed this failure directly to a critical shortage of Patriot interceptor missiles, emphasizing that air defense remains a “top priority”.
Widespread Nationwide Assaults
The August 1 attack on Kyiv followed a broader nationwide assault that occurred just two days prior, spanning from July 30 to July 31. During that barrage, President Zelenskyy reported that Russia launched over 70 missiles and 280 drones, targeting at least 10 Ukrainian regions.
That earlier attack killed at least eight civilians and wounded more than 50. It caused severe casualties in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where a ballistic missile struck a residential building in Radushne. A cruise missile attack also struck the western city of Lviv, wounding 34 people, including children.

The late July attacks also triggered international alarm when NATO scrambled warplanes after a suspected Russian Kh-101 cruise missile breached Polish airspace. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk ordered an inspection of a probable impact site near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia, close to the border.
