Uber Layoffs 2026: Uber Technologies is cutting approximately 3,300 jobs, equivalent to around 10% of its global workforce, in the company’s biggest round of layoffs since the COVID-19 pandemic. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the restructuring is designed to simplify the company’s organization, reduce management layers and speed up decision-making.
The cuts come as Uber prepares for a major transformation in the transportation industry, particularly around autonomous vehicles.
Why Is Uber Cutting Jobs?
Uber says the restructuring is intended to make the company more efficient and redirect savings toward growth and innovation. One of the biggest priorities is autonomous driving.
The company faces rapidly increasing competition from robotaxi companies such as Waymo and Tesla and has committed more than $10 billion toward autonomous-vehicle technology, according to Reuters. Uber wants to remain a major player even as human-driven ride-hailing potentially begins shifting toward autonomous fleets.
AI and Automation Are Changing Uber
The Uber layoffs are also part of a broader technology-driven transformation across the transportation sector. However, Khosrowshahi did not directly blame artificial intelligence for the job cuts.
Instead, Uber is restructuring teams, reducing management layers and concentrating employees in key locations. The company is also limiting some remote-work roles as it attempts to create a leaner operating structure.
Uber’s traditional businesses are facing pressure from multiple directions. In ride-hailing, autonomous vehicle companies are developing competing services.
In food delivery, Uber Eats faces strong competition from companies such as DoorDash and Instacart. Uber has responded by pursuing acquisitions and investments to strengthen its position. Reuters reported that the company agreed to acquire Delivery Hero’s food-delivery operations in a deal worth around $14.8 billion.
Is This an AI Layoff?
Not exactly. The Uber cuts highlight something broader happening across technology companies: businesses are increasingly restructuring around automation, AI and new technology while simultaneously trying to control costs.
Uber has also spent heavily on AI-related initiatives and exceeded its 2026 AI budget within the first four months of the year, according to Reuters. But the company says the layoffs are primarily about organizational efficiency and its changing strategic priorities.

What Happens to Uber Now?
