The US-Iran war has entered a dangerous new phase after American forces struck three Iranian crude oil tankers, including one near the strategically critical Kharg Island, following an Iranian Revolutionary Guard missile attack on two American Navy ships.

U.S. CENTCOM confirmed the strikes on September 5, saying the action came after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched ballistic missiles at two American naval vessels. The tanker crews were reportedly evacuated and Iranian sources said there were no immediate casualties.

Why Kharg Island Matters

The location of the attack is particularly significant. Kharg Island is Iran’s most important oil-export hub, handling a major share of the country’s crude shipments. Any prolonged military action around the island could therefore threaten not only Iran’s economy but also global energy markets.

The latest escalation comes as the Strait of Hormuz remains severely disrupted, limiting the movement of oil from the Gulf. Brent crude was already trading around $96 a barrel, with traders watching closely for signs that the conflict could push prices towards the psychologically important $100 mark.

Trump Warns Iran

The strikes follow repeated threats from President Donald Trump over Iranian attacks and the country’s oil infrastructure. Trump had earlier threatened action against Kharg Island, while Tehran warned that an attack on the strategic oil terminal would trigger a major response.

The latest strikes raise the possibility of another cycle of escalation: Iranian attacks on US forces, followed by American strikes on Iranian military or economic targets.

Why This Matters for India

For India, the biggest concern is oil. India imports most of its crude requirements, meaning a prolonged disruption around the Gulf could increase the country’s import bill and put additional pressure on the rupee and inflation.

A reckless move towards $100+ crude could therefore affect everything from fuel prices and transportation costs to inflation and India’s trade deficit.

What Happens Next?

The critical question is whether Iran retaliates directly against US forces or targets additional energy infrastructure. If attacks spread around Kharg Island or the Strait of Hormuz, the conflict could quickly become not just a US-Iran confrontation, but a global energy crisis.
