NEW DELHI: India’s push for absolute self-reliance in advanced defense manufacturing has secured a historic breakthrough. Indian scientists and engineers have successfully developed the nation’s first indigenous Expendable Turbojet Engine (ETJE) in the highly sought-after 350 kg thrust class.
This massive technological milestone fundamentally reduces the Indian Armed Forces’ historical reliance on expensive, foreign-imported propulsion technologies for its next generation of lethal airborne systems.
Turbojet Engine To Power Missiles and UAVs
The state-of-the-art engine was conceptualized and designed by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), a premier laboratory operating under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). However, in a major win for the government’s “Make in India” initiative, the engine was successfully manufactured, precisely assembled, and delivered by the private sector firm Azad Engineering, based in Hyderabad.

The completed engine was formally handed over to Dr. K. Rajalakshmi Menon, Director General of Aeronautical Systems at DRDO, on July 22.
This specific 350 kg thrust class engine is designed to be “expendable”—meaning it is built for single-use, high-performance missions. It will serve as the primary power plant for India’s growing arsenal of advanced, long-range cruise missiles and lethal Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).
Mastering Complex Engineering
Jet engine propulsion technology is universally considered one of the most secretive and complex engineering disciplines on the planet, heavily guarded by only a small handful of advanced nations. Developing a functional turbojet requires absolute mastery over advanced metallurgy, high-heat tolerances, and ultra-precision manufacturing.
The successful realization of the ETJE proves the rapidly growing technological maturity of India’s domestic defense industrial base. DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh lauded the achievement, emphasizing that the successful partnership between government scientists and private industry has transformed a long-term strategic vision into a concrete reality.
With the engine now moving toward rigorous integration and field testing, India is actively accelerating its broader indigenous propulsion programs, ensuring that the next era of Indian combat aircraft, missiles, and drones will fly purely on domestic power.
