At least 10 people were killed and 18 injured after a Russian missile struck the Ukrainian settlement of Pechenihy in the Kharkiv region on Tuesday, Ukrainian officials said. The attack hit an area containing a post office, shops and residential buildings. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike and said Kyiv would respond.
The attack comes as the war enters another intense phase, with both sides dramatically increasing long-range drone and missile operations.
Russia Missile Strike Hits Civilian Area
The missile strike damaged at least 10 private buildings, a café, several shops and 15 vehicles, according to Ukrainian authorities. Emergency teams were sent to the scene to search for victims and provide medical assistance.

The strike has renewed concerns about attacks on populated areas in northeastern Ukraine, particularly the Kharkiv region, which has remained one of the most heavily targeted parts of the country because of its proximity to the aggressor. Moscow had not immediately issued a detailed response to the Ukrainian account of the attack.
Ukraine Launches Massive Drone Attack
The strike was followed by reports of a major Ukrainian drone offensive against Russia. Ukrainian forces launched nearly 800 drones toward the ‘enemy’ territory, according to officials in Moscow, it was one of the largest reported drone attacks of the war.
The increasingly large-scale drone attacks demonstrate how Ukraine has expanded its ability to strike targets deep inside Russia. Kyiv has increasingly focused on Moscow’s military facilities, logistics networks and energy infrastructure in an attempt to disrupt Moscow’s ability to sustain the war.

Why Kharkiv Remains a Major Target
Kharkiv is Ukraine’s second-largest city and lies relatively close to the border. Its geographic position has made the surrounding region particularly vulnerable to missiles, drones and artillery.
Moscow has repeatedly targeted Ukrainian energy and military infrastructure, while Ukraine has responded with long-range strikes against targets inside Moscow. The result is an increasingly complex aerial battle extending far beyond the traditional front lines.

What Happens Next?
The latest exchange suggests that the Russia-Ukraine conflict remains far from a reduction in hostilities. The deadly strike in Pechenihy is likely to trigger another Ukrainian response, while Moscow’s ability to conduct large-scale missile and drone attacks remains intact.
With diplomatic efforts yet to produce a lasting settlement, long-range strikes are becoming an increasingly important component of the war.
