NEW DELHI: Bowing to unprecedented nationwide pressure and weeks of relentless student protests, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has officially resigned from the Union Council of Ministers. In his departure letter, Pradhan explicitly stated that holding the office was “not a matter of personal prestige” for him. He emphasized that his decision to step down was driven by a need to protect the interests of students and ensure that the country’s youth do not become “trapped in a web of confusion” or prolonged legal complexities . Highlighting his four decades of dedication to education reform, he noted that a forward-looking education system is the bedrock of a strong nation. Furthermore, the outgoing minister issued a stark warning about the ongoing demonstrations, stating that he resigned to prevent “anti-national forces” from exploiting the volatile situation at Jantar Mantar and across the nation.
Taking Moral Responsibility: Dharmendra Pradhan In His Resignation Letter
While stepping down, Pradhan defended the government’s handling of the crisis since the irregularities in the May 3 examination first came to light. He highlighted that the Centre took immediate cognisance by handing the investigation over to the CBI, cancelling the compromised exam, and rapidly organizing a successful re-test for over two million candidates on June 21. He also pointed to the government’s recent decision to mandate a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format for the exam starting next year to drastically improve transparency.
“From day one, I took responsibility for this and never turned my back on the situation,” Pradhan wrote, asserting his resolve to prevent the “examination mafia” from ruining the prospects of meritorious students. He noted that the July 16 results were satisfactory,but expressed deep sadness over individuals in positions of responsibility who allegedly attempted to mislead students and cause deliberate disruptions.
