GURUGRAM: Tensions continue to flare around the hospitalization of prominent climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. On Wednesday, July 22, 2026, the Haryana Police successfully intercepted and blocked a 15-member delegation of Members of Parliament (MPs) representing the opposition INDIA bloc from entering Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. The MPs had arrived at the private facility intending to meet with Wangchuk, who is currently on the 25th day of an indefinite hunger strike protesting alleged examination irregularities.
Police Intercept Opposition Delegation To Meet Sonam Wangchuk
The high-profile opposition delegation arrived at Medanta Hospital to express solidarity with the activist, whose health remains a matter of national concern. However, heavily deployed Haryana Police personnel barricaded the hospital’s entrance. According to the police, hospital administration rules explicitly state that only individuals with a direct blood relationship to the patient are permitted entry into Sonam Wangchuk’s highly monitored ward.
Following a heated back-and-forth verbal exchange with law enforcement officers, the frustrated MPs decided to stage a sit-in protest directly outside the hospital gates. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh vehemently criticized the heavy police presence. “Even though Court told him that he has not been detained, the police force that is outside the hospital tells another story,” Singh stated. Unable to bypass the barricades, the delegation eventually handed a joint letter to Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, before departing for New Delhi.
CJP Urges Wangchuk to End the Fast
Simultaneously, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)—the primary youth movement organizing the ongoing protests at Jantar Mantar—issued an emotional appeal to Wangchuk, urging him to finally break his fast. The student organizers pleaded with the activist to prioritize his rapidly deteriorating health while vowing that their campaign for “examination justice” would continue unabated.

Wangchuk responded to the appeals, stating he is prepared to end his indefinite hunger strike under one strict condition: the central government must provide an unequivocal, public assurance that no punitive, legal, or retaliatory actions will be taken against the thousands of youth and students participating in the protests. According to his wife, Wangchuk is still waiting for this critical government assurance before he agrees to consume solid food. Wangchuk had recently been transferred to Medanta from Safdarjung Hospital following a direct order from the Delhi High Court.
