PATNA: In a major political upset, Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) founder Prashant Kishor won his debut electoral contest, capturing the Bankipur Assembly by-election on Monday, August 3, 2026.
Kishor defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar by a significant margin of 19,324 votes. Kishor secured 64,151 votes to Kumar’s 44,827, while RJD candidate Rekha Kumari finished a distant third with only 14,273 votes.

The victory is considered a massive breakthrough for Kishor and marks a dramatic turnaround for his Jan Suraaj Party. In the 2025 Bihar assembly elections, the party contested 238 seats but failed to win a single one, securing a mere 3.44% vote share, and polling fewer votes than NOTA in 68 constituencies. This win validates his claim as an emerging political alternative in Bihar.
The result is equally significant as a major symbolic defeat for the BJP. Bankipur has been one of the BJP’s safest urban strongholds for over three decades, held continuously since 1995.
The seat was vacated by BJP national president Nitin Nabin, who had won the constituency four consecutive times—most recently in 2025 with a commanding 63.25% vote share—before being elected to the Rajya Sabha. Losing a bastion intimately connected to the party president raises critical questions about the BJP’s organizational strength and its ability to retain traditional urban voters.
