India Weather Alert: The Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of another spell of intense monsoon rainfall across several parts of the country, with heavy to extremely heavy rain expected in eastern, central, northern and western regions.
According to the latest IMD forecast, a depression over coastal West Bengal is driving a significant rainfall episode, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall expected over Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha on August 13, and over Chhattisgarh on August 13 and 14. The weather system is also expected to bring thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across several areas.
India Weather Alert: States Facing Heavy Rain
The latest forecasts point to significant rainfall risks across multiple regions. Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand are among the areas facing the threat of extremely heavy rainfall, while Chhattisgarh is also expected to receive intense rain.

Parts of Delhi-NCR and northwest India are also expected to experience widespread rainfall over the coming days. The IMD has separately warned of heavy rainfall over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and adjoining regions, particularly during August 13–14 and again later in the week.
Why Is Rainfall Intensifying?
The current weather pattern is linked to an active monsoon circulation and the depression developing near coastal West Bengal. Low-pressure systems and depressions over the Bay of Bengal are common during India’s southwest monsoon. They can draw large amounts of moisture inland, resulting in widespread rainfall across central, eastern and northern India.
When such systems become strong, rainfall can become concentrated over a short period, increasing the risk of flooding and waterlogging. Heavy rainfall creates multiple hazards beyond simply wet weather.

Low-lying urban areas can experience rapid waterlogging, while rivers may rise quickly after sustained rainfall. In mountainous regions, saturated soil can increase the risk of landslides and rockfalls. Road and rail networks can also be disrupted, while flight operations may be affected by thunderstorms and poor visibility.
Authorities in vulnerable regions have therefore been advised to remain prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
Delhi and Other Cities Remain on Alert
Delhi-NCR has already experienced periods of heavy rainfall during the current monsoon season. The latest warnings indicate that widespread rain could continue across northwest India. Residents should monitor local IMD warnings, particularly during thunderstorms and periods of intense rainfall.

People living in flood-prone or landslide-prone areas should follow evacuation instructions if authorities issue them.

What Happens Next?
The current weather system is expected to continue influencing rainfall patterns over the next several days. For eastern and central India, the immediate concern is extremely heavy rain and potential flooding. For northern and Himalayan regions, rainfall combined with steep terrain raises concerns over landslides and flash flooding.
With the southwest monsoon still active, weather conditions can change quickly. The IMD continues to monitor the depression and associated atmospheric systems and will update regional warnings as the situation develops.
