A routine Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a mid-air emergency on September 30 after a violent incident reportedly erupted inside the cockpit, sending the Boeing 737 MAX into a rapid descent and triggering fears of a possible hijacking.

Flight FZ1073, carrying more than 170 people, was travelling from Dubai International Airport to Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport when the aircraft suddenly lost thousands of feet in altitude over the region.

Passengers later described hearing shouting and witnessing a struggle near the cockpit. Israeli officials said one pilot had stabbed the other and apparently attempted to crash the aircraft. Passengers and crew eventually intervened, while additional Flydubai pilots who were travelling on board took control of the aircraft.

The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Both pilots were taken for medical treatment, while Saudi authorities dealt with the incident.

Flydubai has confirmed that an altercation occurred in the flight deck but has cautioned against premature speculation about the motive or circumstances while the investigation continues.

So, what exactly happened aboard FZ1073?

What happened to Flydubai flight FZ1073?

Flydubai flight FZ1073 departed Dubai for Tel Aviv on September 30. The Boeing 737 MAX was cruising at roughly 34,000 feet when its flight path suddenly changed.

According to flight-tracking data, the aircraft dropped by more than 14,000 feet in less than a minute, with the plane experiencing further altitude fluctuations afterwards. The sudden descent alarmed passengers and raised concerns among aviation authorities because the aircraft appeared to be experiencing an emergency.

The situation became more serious when the aircraft transmitted emergency signals.

Why did the Flydubai plane send a hijacking signal?

Flight-tracking data showed that the aircraft first transmitted squawk 7700, the internationally recognised code for a general emergency. It later transmitted squawk 7500, which indicates unlawful interference or a hijacking situation.

The 7500 signal immediately raised the possibility that the aircraft had been hijacked. However, the transmission itself does not establish why the code was selected or exactly what was happening inside the cockpit.

Israeli authorities were reportedly unable to establish immediate contact with the aircraft, increasing concern over the situation. Israeli fighter aircraft were scrambled as the plane changed course and headed toward Saudi Arabia.

What happened inside the cockpit?

This remains one of the most important parts of the investigation. According to Israeli officials and passenger accounts, one of the pilots attacked the other inside the cockpit. Israeli officials said the co-pilot stabbed the captain and then apparently attempted to crash the aircraft.

Reuters reported that the injured captain managed to open the cockpit door despite his injuries, allowing passengers and crew members to enter. Several passengers then helped subdue the alleged attacker.

Videos recorded after the incident appeared to show two bloodied men on the floor near the cockpit. Reuters said the footage showed one man wearing a co-pilot’s uniform insignia, while passengers could be heard describing the incident as an attack on the pilot.

However, Flydubai itself has not publicly confirmed all of these details. The airline has said only that an altercation occurred in the flight deck and that the underlying reasons and motives remain unknown pending investigation.

How did passengers stop the alleged attacker?

Passenger accounts describe a chaotic scene near the front of the aircraft. As the plane began making sudden descents, passengers reportedly realised that something was seriously wrong.

According to Israeli officials, the injured captain managed to open the cockpit door. Passengers and crew then moved toward the cockpit and subdued the other pilot. Reuters reported that a passenger overpowered the alleged attacker while others helped secure the area.

A reserve Flydubai crew was also travelling on the aircraft. Once the situation was brought under control, those pilots took over the aircraft’s operation and stabilised the flight. The presence of additional qualified Flydubai crew members aboard the aircraft was therefore critical to the eventual safe landing..

Where did the Flydubai flight land?

Instead of continuing toward Tel Aviv, FZ1073 was diverted to Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia. The aircraft landed safely after the reserve Flydubai crew took control.

Saudi authorities subsequently provided medical assistance to those requiring treatment. The passengers were later transported onward to Israel using replacement aircraft.

Flydubai said all passengers and crew were safe and accounted for.

Were passengers injured?

The most serious injuries were reportedly suffered by the two pilots involved in the cockpit confrontation. The captain was injured after being stabbed, while the other pilot was also injured during the struggle to restrain him.

Passengers were reportedly treated for minor injuries or the effects of the incident, but there were no reported passenger fatalities. The aircraft itself survived the emergency and landed safely in Tabuk.

Why did Israel scramble fighter jets?

The Israeli military had reason to treat the situation as potentially serious because the aircraft was heading toward Israel but had transmitted an emergency signal associated with unlawful interference. The aircraft also suddenly changed its flight profile and diverted toward Saudi Arabia.

With authorities initially unable to establish normal communications with the aircraft, Israeli fighter aircraft were scrambled as a precaution.

The deployment does not by itself establish that the aircraft had been hijacked. Rather, it reflects the security response to an aircraft that appeared to be experiencing an abnormal and potentially dangerous situation.

Israeli officials have described the incident as an apparent attempt to hijack or crash the aircraft. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said preliminary information indicated that the attacker intended to crash the plane.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also said that one pilot had stabbed the other and apparently attempted to crash the aircraft. However, Flydubai has not confirmed the motive.

The airline has described the event as an altercation in the flight deck and said the reasons behind it remain under investigation. It specifically urged people not to engage in premature speculation.

Therefore, the safest description at this stage is a Flydubai hijacking scare or suspected attempted takeover, rather than stating as an established fact that the flight was hijacked.

What does Flydubai say?

Flydubai has taken a cautious position on the incident.

The airline confirmed that an “altercation occurred in the flight deck” and said that the aircraft was secured by on-duty Flydubai crew travelling on the flight.

Those crew members diverted the aircraft to Tabuk and landed safely.

Flydubai also said that the underlying reasons and motives were unknown and remained subject to a formal investigation.

The airline urged authorities, media organisations and the public to avoid premature conclusions while investigators establish what happened.

What do Israeli officials say?

Israeli officials have provided a more detailed account. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said one pilot stabbed the other and apparently attempted to crash the aircraft. Defence Minister Israel Katz said the preliminary information indicated that the attacker intended to crash the aircraft and praised the passengers who intervened.

Israeli officials have described the passengers who entered the cockpit and restrained the alleged attacker as having prevented a potentially catastrophic outcome. However, these statements represent the Israeli government’s account and should be distinguished from the airline’s more limited confirmed statement.

Who was the pilot involved?

The identity and background of the alleged attacker remain subject to investigation. Early reports contained varying information about the crew members and their nationalities.

Because the investigation is ongoing, details about the alleged attacker’s identity, motive and background should not be treated as confirmed unless released by the relevant authorities or the airline.

Was this a terror attack?

There has been speculation about terrorism because of the nature of the incident and the fact that the aircraft was carrying passengers between Dubai and Israel. Israeli officials have described the incident in terms suggesting a possible terror attack.

However, the motive has not been officially established.

Flydubai has explicitly said the underlying reasons and motives remain unknown and are being investigated. Therefore, at this stage, it would be premature to state definitively that the incident was a terrorist attack.

Investigators will need to establish the motive, planning, circumstances inside the cockpit and the reasons for the aircraft’s change in flight path.

What happened after the emergency landing?

After landing at Tabuk, passengers were provided with medical assistance and support. The aircraft remained in Saudi Arabia while authorities dealt with the incident. Flydubai subsequently arranged replacement aircraft to transport passengers onward to Tel Aviv.

Passengers eventually arrived at Ben Gurion Airport more than 10 hours after the initial incident.

Several passengers described the experience as terrifying but praised fellow travellers and the additional pilots who helped bring the situation under control.

What happened to the aircraft?

Images of the aircraft after landing showed apparent damage around the rear rudder area. The Times of Israel reported that images appeared to show a section of the rudder missing from the vertical stabiliser. A former Shin Bet aviation-security official told the publication that the damage may have resulted from the aircraft’s rapid descent rather than an external impact.

That explanation has not been established as the official cause of the damage.

A technical examination will be required to determine exactly what happened to the aircraft during the emergency.

Why was the incident so dangerous?

A commercial aircraft at cruising altitude depends on its flight crew to maintain stable flight, manage navigation and respond to emergencies.A violent confrontation inside the cockpit can therefore create multiple simultaneous risks.

In this case, passengers reported sudden altitude changes while the cockpit was reportedly the scene of a physical struggle. The aircraft also transmitted emergency codes and diverted from its planned route.

The situation became particularly serious because authorities initially could not establish normal communication with the aircraft. The presence of additional qualified Flydubai pilots aboard the aircraft ultimately provided another layer of operational capability.

The precise sequence and timing remain subject to investigation.
